Dami Aluko

Tell us about your journey in the Energy Sector.

My interest in energy began early, inspired by my mother’s work at the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) back in Nigeria. As a child, visiting power stations with her sparked my fascination with energy systems.

This foundation was further built upon during my National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) service in 2016, where I was introduced to renewable energy by a friend and we sought to create a start-up company focused on minigrids. In the course of this quest, I began to explore solar energy and smart grid technologies seriously.

How did you develop further in this sector?

I started my early career working in the R&D (Hardware) department of a smart metering company, before proceeding to work hands-on with a commercial and industrial solar energy company. I gained valuable knowledge and experience during this period and eventually moved to pursue my master’s degree.

I obtained my Master’s degree in Satellite Applications and Data Science, and in my dissertation, I focused on employing machine learning with satellite altimetry data for renewable energy applications. This allowed me to connect my new background with my passion for clean energy.

Tell us a bit about your role at SNRG?

At SNRG, within the Commercial and Product function, I work on modeling, solutions & propositions.

SNRG, the UK’s leading smart grid company, integrates renewable and clean energy technologies—such as solar panels, EV charging stations, low-carbon heating systems, and battery storage—into private microgrid systems.

I contribute by proposing and analysing the commercial viability of solutions that optimize energy consumption through onsite generation, enhance flexibility, and manage peak demands effectively – providing the utmost value to our clients.

You’ve highlighted on-the-job learning as a consistent part of your journey—how has this influenced your career?

Working in startups and small companies has always required me to take on multiple roles.

My interest in the commercial and financial aspects of projects was sparked while working on impact projects funded by organizations like the World Bank and Innovate UK. I vividly recall having to build business cases and investment models from the ground up, which deepened my understanding of project economics and strategic decision-making.

To complement my responsibilities, I’ve pursued courses in finance, project management, data science, and performance measurement and verification. This continuous upskilling has allowed me to remain competitive in the fast-evolving renewable energy sector. Now, I find it impossible to evaluate a solution or product without considering its commercial viability and investment rationale.

What is your outlook for the energy sector?

The sector has grown rapidly since I started in 2016, and the potential for future innovations is exciting. Technologies like smart grids and battery storage will continue to shape the clean energy landscape, and I’m eager to contribute to these advancements.

Can you tell us more about the Dami Aluko Foundation?

The Dami Aluko Foundation was established to support disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals, with a primary focus on children in Nigeria. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for these individuals by promoting a sustainable lifestyle, empowering them with the skills needed to become self-sufficient.

Recently, we launched a scholarship fund at my secondary school to help high-achieving students finance their education. Additionally, we’ve initiated a collaboration with a local orphanage to sponsor the education of three orphans over the next three years.

The foundation is currently self-funded, but we are in the process of creating a fund that will allow others to contribute and support our mission. Details of this initiative will be launched and published soon.

What are your thoughts on your nomination for the Sustainability Champion of the year Award?

I was pleasantly surprised to be nominated as a finalist for the award. While I’m rooting for a fellow nominee whom I believe is particularly deserving, I’m truly grateful for the recognition regardless.

At the time of this interview, the awards night had not yet taken place. Following the event, the fellow nominee whom Dami was rooting for was ultimately announced as the winner of the category!

What advice do you have for aspiring professionals?

Don’t hesitate to explore new areas and take the initiative to learn.

Many of the skills I use today, I acquired on the job or through self-study. Focus on delivering high-quality work and show the value of continuous learning and it will open doors for your development.

Lastly, networking is crucial. Building strong relationships in your field will significantly boost your career.

Dami’s story underscores the significance of passion, adaptability, and lifelong learning in the ever-evolving energy industry. His philanthropic efforts through the Dami Aluko Foundation, which supports vulnerable communities, add an inspiring dimension to his journey. As he continues to break new ground in renewable energy, his impact is evident not only through his professional achievements but also in his commitment to empowering others.
